Part 1 – Truffle Hunting with Maggi – Introduction to Truffle Hunting
Truffles aren’t something you can only find in southern Europe – they grow in central Europe and Switzerland as well. With their exceptionally keen sense of smell, dogs can reliably locate these fungi among the tree roots where they grow.
Going on an exciting search together not only strengthens the bond between humans and their dogs but also provides the mental and physical stimulation the animal craves. It only takes about 30 minutes of intense scent work for most dogs to be happy and feel balanced.
In Switzerland, Burgundy truffles are particularly common. They grow underground among the tree roots and, once mature, give off an intense smell that attracts both wild animals and trained truffle dogs. While wild animals spread the spores naturally, dogs can sniff out the truffles directly so that their humans can harvest them. Culinary enthusiasts appreciate their delicate flavour that complements a wide variety of dishes.
Any dog breed can be trained for truffle hunting, as all dogs possess the necessary sense of smell. With the right motivation and guidance, truffle hunting can be both successful and enjoyable – an enriching activity for humans and dogs alike.
