Part 4 – Dog-Owner Codex – He just wants to play
“He just wants to say hello!” How many times have you heard someone say that? Or maybe you’ve even said it yourself? It may be well-meaning, but it can become a problem very quickly.
In the video, Cyrill from Charly’s Dog Training explains why uncontrolled dog meetings on a lead are risky: the other person may be in the middle of training their dog. They may have a reactive dog. Maybe your dog’s reactive. If they end up attacking each other, it’s unpleasant for everyone involved and you may even have to deal with a bite wound.
On top of that, when dogs are on a lead, flight isn’t an option. They can’t just run away. And if flight isn’t an option, fight is the only option left. And that comes with lots of risks.
What you absolutely need is good recall. If your dog responds reliably, you can create controlled encounters. And if someone says “he just wants to play”, block the other dog to give your dog a safe space.
