Part 2 - Truffle Hunting with Maggi - Teamwork
Truffle hunting is always a collaboration between a human and their dog. While the dog locates the fungi with its keen sense of smell, its human is responsible for choosing the right areas to hunt. Climate, tree species, and soil composition are decisive factors in finding suitable locations.
Training the dog is usually quite quick. Many dogs understand what’s expected of them within a few days. Equally important is a respectful approach to nature and the environment: any holes that you dig have to be filled again to preserve the habitat. It’s worth seeking professional guidance, e.g. by doing some courses, so that you learn how to hunt truffles sustainably and harvest them properly.
Safety is also crucial. Dogs must be under control at all times as there are likely to be wild animals, livestock, or natural hazards such as slopes and streams in the areas where you’re truffle hunting. You’ll only become a successful truffle hunter if you cooperate closely with your dog, act responsibly and make sure you’re both safe.
