In Switzerland, Burgundy truffles are particularly common. They grow underground among the tree roots and, once mature, give off an intense smell that attracts both wild animals and trained truffle dogs. While wild animals spread the spores naturally, dogs can sniff out the truffles directly so that their humans can harvest them. Culinary enthusiasts appreciate their delicate flavour that complements a wide variety of dishes.
Any dog breed can be trained for truffle hunting, as all dogs possess the necessary sense of smell. With the right motivation and guidance, truffle hunting can be both successful and enjoyable – an enriching activity for humans and dogs alike.
